Playing Football with a View of the Aegean Sea

Chios is part of the group of eastern Aegean islands. It is the fifth largest island in Greece, and its eponymous capital is located within sight of the western Turkish coast. The small coastal town of Vrontados is now considered a suburb of the capital. Particularly inspiring is the view that the up to 3,000 spectators in the Fafalieio Stadium have, stretching far out over the Aegean Sea. The arena was built in 1975, with comprehensive renovations carried out in 2006. During this renovation, the athletics track was realized with Polytan Rekortan BS in combination with Polytan Rekortan M, while the football field in between was equipped with our LigaTurf system. On the neighboring basketball court, the Polyplay SE surface was used: our all-round surface with a smooth, non-slip finish.

In July 2021, the turf system was renewed. The elastic base layer under the old turf was in very good condition and will continue to provide consistent shock absorption values and optimal player protection under the new synthetic turf system. Moreover, most of the old artificial turf was also in an excellent state, allowing it to be donated to the municipality of Chios to cater to the needs of various schools on the island.

The old turf has been replaced by our LigaTurf RS+ system, which is equally appreciated by both professional and amateur athletes. LigaTurf RS+ CoolPlus proved its worth as the preferred surface at the Women's World Cup in Canada, including for the final at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. The investors, the Fafalios family, also selected our globally leading product with FIFA Quality Pro certification for the Fafalieio Stadium. The turf fiber, with a thickness of 360 μm, meets the highest demands for shock absorption, ball roll, and ball bounce behavior over a long lifespan.
