World Premiere
First Climate-Neutral Hockey Turf Installed.
Poligras
With Poligras Paris GT zero, we now have the world's first carbon-neutral artificial turf for field hockey in our portfolio. It is 100 percent climate-neutral without compromising playability. This is made possible by the interaction of various measures: the manufacturing process as well as the use of bio-based plastics from sustainable agriculture. The surface developed for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris was recently installed for the first time at the prestigious Hamburger Polo Club e.V.

A crucial role in achieving maximum sustainability for Poligras Paris GT zero is played by our continuously improved product design, which leads to reduced water usage. For example, the artificial turf surfaces used in the Tokyo Olympic Games required 39% less water than the turf surfaces used in Rio four years earlier. Polytan Paris GT zero continues this progress with the introduction of Turf Glide, a new patented technology that reduces surface friction, requiring even less water overall to minimize friction resistance and, ultimately, the risk of injury.
Polytan installed the first Poligras Paris GT zero hockey turf at the renowned Hamburger Polo Club e.V. in October 2022, whose men's team plays in the 1st Bundesliga. ‘Being able to play on this turf is a huge advantage for our international players,’ explains Matthias Witthaus, coach of the Hamburger Polo Club.
Poligras Tokyo GT was already extremely popular in all major hockey nations, with over 50 installations. This is a strong indication that hockey is also developing in the direction of sustainability. The new hockey surface will help Paris achieve the environmental goals it has set for itself, and will help hockey catch up with the top of the sustainability efforts in sport.
Poligras Paris GT zero marks the next consistent development step in Polytan's sustainable Green Technology (GT), which began with the globally used Poligras Tokyo GT hockey turf. During the production of the turf fibers, polyethylene based on fossil fuels is replaced by bio-based polyethylene. This I'm Green™ polyethylene is a bioplastic from Braskem, the world's largest producer of bio-based polyethylene, which focuses on a byproduct of Brazilian sugarcane processing for our carbon-free hockey turf. During the production of I'm Green™ polyethylene, the first two pressings are used for sugar production, while the third—no longer suitable for this purpose—serves as the raw material for bio-polyethylene, which composes approximately 80% of Poligras Paris GT zero.
To achieve carbon-neutral production of bioplastics, the bagasse, a byproduct of sugarcane pressing, is also used in a biopower plant to generate energy and heat. The production of Poligras Paris GT zero takes place in Germany, in Grefrath on the Lower Rhine, where we use 100% green energy for this purpose.
The Olympic hockey tournament in Paris will be held at the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir, hosting both the men's and women's competitions. Naturally, all hockey games will be played on our new Poligras Paris GT zero. And even on the road to the Olympics, our hockey turf systems are being utilized, for example, at the 2023 European Hockey Championships this summer in SparkassenPark Mönchengladbach. The winning team of the championship will qualify directly for Paris. On site is the Poligras Tokyo GT, essentially the predecessor of our current Olympic turf.
Since a product's lifespan has a significant impact on the climate and environment, Poligras Paris GT zero is extremely durable and maintains its excellent performance even after years of intense use. For instance, the fibers are equipped with a robust protection against UV radiation and wear, ensuring this hockey turf withstands extreme climatic conditions in countries like Australia and India.
And even after the end of its usage phase, our support continues: Together with FormaTurf GmbH, another subsidiary of Sport Group Holding GmbH, we offer a recycling solution where old artificial turf is 100% recycled. For this purpose, we have built a state-of-the-art facility in Essen that reintroduces old turf systems into the circular economy—processing both the turf backing and the filaments and infill. Ultimately, the turf carpet and rubber granulate are processed into new plastic products.
